Amazing art, architecture and archaeology are all in abundance in and around the beautiful Wiltshire city of Salisbury.
Salisbury cathedral is celebrating its 800th birthday this year and sits in splendour in the centre of the city. Like us, you will find yourself looking skywards for much of your visit to see the incredibly detailed carvings both inside and out, and then just take the opportunity to sit inside the cathedral and enjoy the peace and beauty that surrounds you.
Not only does the city have strong ties to our armed forces, but has also been home to leaders and politicians including Sir Edward Heath, whose former home, Arundells, is a treasure trove of art and sailing memorabilia. Once you have meandered through the beautiful streets of Salisbury, you don’t have to travel far to marvel at Stonehenge, Clarendon Park and the site of the original city of Salisbury, Old Sarum.
It’s only an hour and a half from London, but it is well worth spending a night or two, particularly when you have the stunning Heckfield Place just down the road
