I was inspired to launch Humphreys of Henley by my love of the English countryside, I was brought up in the Cotswolds and live in the Chilterns, and I love to share the hidden wonders that are so often missed by visitors.
Our guests provide our proudest moments, when we see their eyes widen in amazement at the majesty of a hawk in full flight, or their absolute joy when they shoot their first clay from the skies.
When we plan your itinerary with you, we identify each detail that will make the day totally memorable for you: your passions and interests are at the heart of the plan.
Our guests tell us that they value the knowledge that they can trust us to deliver exactly what we promise…and more. They value the break from decision-making in their busy lives, the only decisions that you will make on the day is what to wear and what to eat.
Let us do the research, coordination and planning so that you can optimise every moment of your precious leisure time, it’s what we love doing and, I’m proud to say, we are very good at it.
My team and I look forward to creating your memorable experiences for you and welcoming you to our favourite place in the world.
The official story of our name comes from Humphrey Gainsborough, who lived in Henley-on-Thames in the 18th Century and designed some of the local architecture still visible today. His achievements include the lock, weir and footbridge at Marsh Lock, just upstream from Henley as well as Conway's Bridge linking Henley and Wargrave together.
His brother Thomas, the artist, might be more famous, but Henley is proud of its link with Humphrey.
There’s another story behind the name. Sam brought her beloved Golden Retriever, Humphrey, to Henley as a puppy and he became very well known and loved in the town. Once met, Humphrey was never forgotten. Although he sadly died in 2017, his name and memory live on every day when we welcome our guests to the countryside that he loved so much.
Hector joined the team in April 2017 and not only does he skipper river launches rather well, he keeps everything in order in the office and makes everyone smile wherever he goes. He loves the countryside just like Humphrey did, and is at his happiest when out researching wonderful places for our guests to visit.
I am the most recent member of the Humphreys team and I am very excited for what the future holds. We have created some fantastic experiences for our guests and I can’t wait to share them with you.
I have lived locally nearly all my life and am now bringing my two children up in my hometown of Marlow, a beautiful town just along the river from Henley.
I have worked in some amazing venues during my career and one particular highlight was a number of years at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons; an idyllic luxury retreat comprising 2 Michelin star cuisine, beautiful bedrooms and acres of stunning gardens.
One of my personal favourite places is the New Forest and I go on holiday there every year with my children and friends.
I am Maisie and I have been a member of the Humphreys team since June 2021.
One of the main reasons I love the Chilterns so much is because it is where I grew up, I was born and lived in Henley-on-Thames for the whole of my childhood. I moved to Oxford from 2018 to 2021 and fell in love with the city, its incredible architecture (no wonder it is called the city of dreaming spires!), the choice of independent coffee shops, and the beautiful River Isis that runs through Oxford.
For as long as I can remember, my school holidays were filled with visiting places in the UK, from going to every town in Cornwall and heading out long walks along the Cornish beaches to exploring the beautiful streets in Edinburgh and looking out at the spectacular views from the Castle. This is something I continue to love doing and my next venture planned is to visit Lake District.
I am also a great lover of all things food. I love going out for dinner and drinks, trying a different place every time I go out. I especially love supporting independent restaurants, cafes and bars.
If I am not out on walks exploring different towns and villages, you will find me out and about eating, taking photos of everywhere I have been and everything I have eaten, so the memories and these beautiful locations stay with me forever.
The Humphreys of Henley team are the experts in sourcing and creating fabulous things to do in the English countryside.
Sam has used her personal experience of travelling extensively during her corporate career, and applies her understanding of the frustrations of making the most of limited time, and never wanting to have the feeling that you may have missed the best bits.
Having created some imaginative itineraries for friends visiting the area, Sam recognised that it is too easy to just visit the countryside, and not truly experience the heart of England, that can so often be hidden behind closed gates and historical facades.
Proudly based in Henley on Thames, we take inspiration and influence from its rich heritage and traditional values. Henley symbolises the special qualities of English life, and we're confident we have instilled this passion into all that we offer.
Sam enjoyed a successful career as an international consultant, working with a number of blue chip organisations. Her role focused on enabling her clients to work more effectively and efficiently and to help the individuals to achieve their full potential. The ability to develop strong working relationships and understand people and their priorities has made a significant contribution to the success and growth of Humphreys of Henley.
The Humphreys Promise drives all that we do: “We love the British countryside and always seek to protect, preserve and prolong its precious traditions and way of life”
We stay true to our love of the countryside and our ethos of luxury and sustainability, brought to life in an understated style and identity, remaining committed to great experiences, protecting the environment, and engaging positively with local communities.
Experiencing, not just visiting, a destination is an increasing demand from travellers of all ages. The nature of bucket lists is changing: the focus is now on personalised fulfilment and realising one’s potential through immersive experiences.
The Humphreys team constantly scour the English countryside to source a fabulous selection both rare and sporting; royal and aristocratic and importantly, unique, from which your personal itinerary will be created.
Our English countryside has it all: history; celebrity; culture; Olympic legends; private islands; fine dining and the villages that play host to the deadliest and most loved English county, Midsomer.
We do everything possible to understand what is important to you, and our experience has taught us three considerations that matter to us all:
Humphreys delivers the only "access all areas" pass to the Chilterns and the Cotswolds. We provide privileged access to private country estates and royal palaces, and bring traditional country pursuits alive for our guests.
We will create wonderful itineraries based on the information that you share with us, and you then have the delightful job of choosing your preferred options and timings.
We ensure every element of your journey is prepared with absolute attention to detail, enabling you to enjoy a seamless, stress free and exceptional experience.
Whether you have chosen a beautiful horse ride through Windsor Great Park or a full week at Henley Royal Regatta, you can look forward to it in the knowledge that every detail has been curated and managed to perfection.
