One of the things we love most at Humphreys of Henley is when a guest arrives with a very specific request. Not something extravagant for the sake of it, but something deeply personal. The sort of request that tells you immediately what really matters to them.
Alan and Megan came to us whilst planning a five-day family escape to the English countryside with their three children. They wanted to properly immerse themselves in countryside life – clay shooting beneath wide winter skies, archery on ancient estates, long lunches, beautiful villages and great English houses full of stories and character.
But amongst all the planning, there was one thing they cared about more than anything else.
All three of their children – aged twelve, fourteen and sixteen – happened to have birthdays during the month of their trip, and they wanted to create one unforgettable family celebration whilst they were all together in England.
Not a formal restaurant. Not a stiff private dining room hidden away at a hotel. They wanted something warm, relaxed and genuinely personal. An evening where they could laugh loudly, settle in comfortably, and simply enjoy being together as a family.
So we created it for them.
The answer, we felt, was Stonor Park.
Hidden quietly amongst the folds of the Chiltern Hills, Stonor has been home to the same family for more than 850 years. Extraordinary enough in itself, but what makes it truly special is that it still feels unmistakably like a family home. Lord and Lady Camoys live there today with their young children, and there is a warmth and ease to the house that you feel almost immediately when you arrive.
We worked closely with the family at Stonor to shape the entire evening around Alan, Megan and the children.
On a cold winter evening, their chauffeur collected them from Cliveden House for the short drive through the countryside to the estate. As they arrived beneath the soft glow of the house lights, the butler welcomed them at the front door and led them inside to the magnificent Gothic Hall.
A roaring log fire crackled beneath ancient stone arches while drinks were served beside the fire. Earlier in the day, we had arranged for a carefully chosen collection of books to be laid out for the family to browse, knowing how much they all loved history and storytelling.
And then came one of the most special touches of the evening.
William Stonor joined them for drinks.
Not as a formal host, but warmly and naturally, as though welcoming friends into his home. He shared stories about growing up in one of England’s oldest manor houses, tales of family ancestors navigating centuries of English history, stories involving Henry VIII, hidden corners of the estate, and the wonderfully peculiar realities of living in a house layered with generations of family life.
Before long, Alan and Megan were sharing stories of their own family too. The children relaxed completely. Everyone settled into that rare sort of conversation where time disappears without anyone noticing.
Meanwhile, above them in the minstrel’s gallery, another surprise quietly unfolded.
Knowing music was important to the family, we had arranged for a harpist to perform a selection of the children’s favourite songs throughout the evening. Hearing familiar music drift softly down into the hall – reimagined beautifully on harp beside the firelight – created one of those magical moments that no one had expected, but everyone remembered.
It was exactly the atmosphere Alan and Megan had hoped for.
Warm. Relaxed. Joyful. Entirely their own.
Dinner followed in the house’s spectacular candlelit dining room, where the family enjoyed a menu created around all their favourite dishes. For the children, the novelty of being served by a traditional English butler became entertainment in itself, and the entire evening felt wonderfully unstaged and easy – elegant without ever feeling formal.
But we still had one final surprise waiting.
After dinner, the brilliant French magician Etienne Pradier arrived to turn the evening from special into unforgettable.
Etienne has spent years entertaining royalty, celebrities and VIP guests, but what makes him so extraordinary is the way he brings people together. Within minutes, the children were crying with laughter, Megan was completely captivated, and Alan briefly became rather concerned when his favourite watch mysteriously disappeared for slightly longer than felt entirely comfortable.
Thankfully, it reappeared.
The children adored every second of it.
By the time the evening finally came to an end, everyone was happily exhausted – the sort of tiredness that only comes from an evening full of laughter, conversation and genuine connection. Their driver waited outside for the short journey back
through the winter countryside to Cliveden, and somewhere along the way, a couple of the children apparently fell asleep in the car still smiling.
Alan later told us it was the highlight of their entire trip.
Not because it was lavish or theatrical.
But because it felt so personal. So thoughtful. So completely designed around their family.
And really, that is exactly what “A Simple Request, Beautifully Answered” is all about.
